Firstly, for those who don’t already know, can you introduce yourself & your background?

DH

Hey, I’m Des Helu. I am a Personal Trainer, International Presenter and Group Fitness Instructor at Les Mills. Before joining the gym community I played both codes of rugby and was a singer. Les Mills allows me to combine my love of fitness and music.

Being a personal Trainer means you’re using your body constantly, how do you ensure you operate at your peak?

FOOD

DH

FOOD. Eating well, always with some treats thrown in for balance! I also genuinely love training and try to mix it up, and listen to my body. Some days I just know I need to do a heavy weights session, its like a craving. Other days a walk with the family is perfect. Lastly I think a positive mindset makes a huge difference. Whenever I’m getting ready for work I’m thinking about what kind of vibes I want to take into the day.

How do you think staying active contributes towards our mental wellbeing?

DH

Our bodies are made to move. I think the key is finding exercise that makes you feel good. That takes away from the aesthetics and just feels right in your body. A way to celebrate movement and what your body can do, regardless of how intense it is or how many calories you burn. The physical benefits are a bonus.

What's next on the work out schedule?

DH

Today I will do some BodyBalance with my beautiful wife and give myself a bit of mind space! We are in Auckland so I’m training clients in Victoria Park next week which is awesome!
